THE Madhvani Foundation has awarded 175 students scholarships totaling sh516m for the academic year 2009/10. The awards were made after highly competitive personal interviews of candidates conducted at Makerere University, recently.

Making the announcement in a press statement last week, the chairman of the Madhvani Foundation, Sam Rutega, said they had initially set a budget with a ceiling of sh500m shillings for scholarships this year. However, due to the elevated number of students who made very strong academic and financial cases for support the board increased this amount by sh16m.

Of the 175 scholarships awarded, 160 went to undergraduate students while 15 went to post graduate candidates.

The majority of scholarships were awarded in the fields of, business administration, information technology and agriculture. Other courses included engineering, land survey, law, medicine and pharmacy.
The Madhvani Foundation has, since 2003, educated 540 university students and provided scholarships worth sh2.5b.
