Five Ugandan girls have a chance to win a scholarship to study abroad.
The Madhvani Foundation and the Zawadi African Educational Fund partnered to facilitate the scholarships.

Two of the scholarships will see the winners study Computer Science courses sponsored by the internet giant Google in South Africa. Interested students have upto August 15 to submit their applications.
The three remaining sponsorships will see the winners head to the United States of America. They have a September 1 deadline to submit their applications.

The scholarship partnership is based on an initiative by former US President John F. Kennedy and the late Kenyan politician, Tom Mboya who worked with American colleges to and saw several needy Africans study in America. The programme is intended to shape future leaders. Some of the scholarship alumni include Kenya’s Prof. Wangari Maathai and Barack Obama Sr, father to Senator Barack Obama, a White house hopeful. Zawadi Africa Education Fund is a US-based non-profit organisation that secures scholarships and covers startup costs for academically gifted, but financially disadvantaged young women with strong leadership potential, the sponsors said in a statement.

The Madhvani Foundation was founded in 1962 by the late Muljibhai Prabhudas Madhvani as a charitable trust to promote scientific and technical education among Ugandans. It has been in operation since 2003 and awards in excess of Shs 400 million to selected students annually.
